Karate Wales Success in Malta
KARATE WALES SUCCESS IN MALTA
A small Karate Wales Squad of just 6 competitors competed at the prestigious Malta International Open on the weekend.
Over 500 competitors were present from Malta, Egypt, Wales, Israel, Italy, England, Romania, South Africa, Scotland, Germany, Ireland, India, Holland and Russia. The first of the squad to win was Alex and Christopher Slack of Vale Karate who put on a excellent performance to win the Gold in the pairs kata, also both competitors just missed out on a medal in their individual categories.
Jacob Denham of Ken Bu Kan had some fantastic fights to reach the final of the 11/12 lightweight category. Jacob was drawn against a very good Russian fighter in the final, with a close fight finishing with Jacob winning the Gold medal! Jacob also reached the final 8 of his kata event.

Next up was Josh Davies (Ken Bu Kan) who was competing in the 11/12 heavyweight category, he fought brilliantly to reach the semi-finals, where he met a very tall English fighter and narrowly lost out on reaching the final by 1 point.
Josh won the bronze medal. Josh was very unlucky in his kata event, he was joint 1st after the first round then he did a classy kata which would surely have won him the Gold had he not lost his balance on the final move.

Sam Cana found himself in a very experienced kata category, nevertheless he performed Bassai to a very high standard to win the bronze medal.

Luke Howard was Karate Wales’ final competitor beating fighters from Israel and Malta to win a bronze medal in the Senior men’s fighting. It was an extremely well run tournament ran by Chris and Lucienne Galea of SKSM Karate Malta. Karate Wales are looking forward to taking a bigger squad to compete next years’ event.
